Beaujolais

This lightly tannic, fruity wine from the Beaujolais region of France is considered the most approachable red wine even for non drinkers. The predominant flavors are of strawberries, cherries, plums, raisins, and raspberries, with occasional tastes of pepper or smoked wood.

Cabernet Franc

Similar to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape produces lighter, less tannic wines with a more pronounced vegetal character. Used commonly as a blending grape, Cabernet Franc is somewhat spicy in aroma and reminiscent of plums and especially violets.

Cabernet Sauvignon

In terms of status and popularity, Cabernet Sauvignon can be regarded as Chardonnay’s counterpart. It is a deep colored, thick-skinned grape that produces dark, flavorsome wine. Particularly noted for its black currant and cedary, cigar-box character.

Carmenere

Though rarely encountered in the vineyards of Bordeaux today, this grape was widely cultivated in the Bordeaux region prior to the Phylloxera era. Now it’s a vigorous vine which yields quantities of exceptionally good, deep colored, full bodied wine, mainly in Chile.

Merlot

More herbaceous than Cabernet Sauvignon in both aroma and taste, Merlot gives softer, plumper, juicier, earlier-maturing wines, which seem sweeter. The ripe, plumMy fruitiness of the Merlot and the absence of harsh tannins have made it one of the most popular red grape varieties.

Pinot Noir

A complex aroma dominated by flavors of black cherries is one of the key features of Pinot Noir. This wine is full-bodied and rich but not heavy, high in alcohol, without being too acidic or tannic, while still retaining a delicate flavor.

Sangiovese

The Sangiovese grape dominates central Italy but only aspires to greatness in Tuscany. It’s medium to full bodied, firm, dry, and a slightly spicy red that ages well. Bitter cherry, spices, tobacco, and herbs dominate the bouquet.
